Notice of the Jordan Silver Mining Company claim in Bingham Kanyon, 1863 Sept. 17.

Mining claim for the Jordan Silver Mining Company for shares in Bingham Kanyon (i.e. Bingham Canyon), Salt Lake Co., Utah Territory, Sept. 17th 1863, A. Gardner, recorder. Bingham Canyon is located in the Oquirrh Mountains approximately twenty-five miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The canyon was first settled in August 1848 by two Mormon pioneers, Thomas and Sanford Bingham. In 1863, silver and gold ores were discovered in the canyon by George B. Ogilvie, Archibald Gardner, and soldiers from Fort Douglas.

Archibald Gardner (1815-1902) was born in Kilsyth, Scotland, and emigrated to Ontario, Canada, in 1822. He started a grist mill and saw mill in Alvinston, Ontario, but left Canada in 1846 after joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and other Mormons fleeing Canada met with American Mormons at Winter Quarters, Nebraska, and arrived in Salt Lake City in 1847.
